Chapter Three: Happiness?

When she stepped through the door,
Mother was there,
Standing a few feet away
With her hand out.

She took the packets
From her inner pocket
And handed them to her.

Her mother gave her a smile,
One that she adored
Because it was the one
That she frequently saw
In the picture frames
That hung against the green wallpaper.
She then passed by her daughter
And headed for the staircase.

She watched as her mother,
Shuffled up the stairs,
Gripping her happiness within two hands.
Chanting the words,
"I will be happy! I deserve happiness!"

As she reached the last step
Her body vanished
Around the corner.

She and her husband,
Stopped sharing the same bedroom
Years ago.
Mother resides in the east bedroom
While Father is in the north.

She pondered
If she too
Will ever receive
Happiness
Like mother
When she has her glass
And father
When he drinks from his
Pretty bottles.

"What kind of happiness will I receive one day?" she thought.

"Rain." The kind-faced maid startled her trance
Of curiosity and wonder.

Her eyes widened,
Turning her attention to the maid.
She didn't think anyone,
Besides her parents,
Ever knew her name.

"It is time to sleep, Miss Rain."
The kind-faced maid spoke her name
Delicately,
One more time.

Her heart shook.
"Why is this woman calling me by a name?" She questioned,

     "She's different."

     "Run away from her."

     "Scary"

     "Help"

Her mind screamed.
She allowed her eyes
To drift to the dark
Wine colored rug she stood on.

She nodded her head
Before holding it down,
Only looking down at the floor
As she headed to the stairs.
She continued this way-
Up the stairs,
And down the hall
To her darkened bedroom.

The kind-faced maid
Stopped at the doorway,
     "Do you need any assistance?"
She asked.

Rain shook her head
And the kind faced maid
Gave a small
Hesitant,
Bow
Before closing the door
And walking away

The kind-faced maids thoughts
Raced back
To when
She was in the kitchen
Watching the Missus
Bundle up Rain
Before sending her out
Into the night.
